Introduction to Feminized Seeds
Female cannabis plants are the only ones that can grow the THC-rich, aromatic buds you know and love. But when you order regular weed seeds online, you may get a mix of male and female marijuana seeds. Male cannabis plants pollinate the females, leading to less potent, seed-filled buds. Worse, cannabis plants don’t show obvious signs of their sex until it’s time to flower, leaving you with wasted time, money, and cross-pollinated nugs. (Experienced cultivators may be able to tell the difference between male and female plants in the vegetative stage.)
Feminized marijuana seeds are made through a combination of cultivation advances like colloidal silver and rodelization, and careful genetic breeding. With feminized seeds, you don’t have to worry about sexing your plants or cross-pollination. Our feminized cannabis seeds are 99% guaranteed to produce female plants so you can focus more on cultivating dank buds and less on worrying about pollen sacks.
When feminized cannabis seeds were new, growers had to worry about hermaphroditism, or female plants becoming male plants. Hermies can happen due to stress during the growing cycle but this can be prevented with proper care.
What benefits do feminized cannabis seeds offer?
In the past, cultivators had to sort by sex to keep the male and female marijuana plants separate or run the risk of a harvest being tainted with seedy, low-potency buds. With feminized marijuana seeds, you don’t have to worry about pesky male plants.
The benefits of feminized cannabis seeds include:
- Better for new growers, removing the need to sex plants or isolate grows
- Cost-effective since you won’t waste money on male seeds
- Diversity of strains with new feminized seeds added regularly
- Low pollination risk leading to better buds
- Can be used for cloning
- 99% guarantee of female cannabis plants
How to grow feminized seeds
The Seed Bank recommends the paper towel germination method for our seeds
- Place your cannabis seeds between two damp paper towels.
- Put the towels and seed in an airtight container such as a plastic bag and place in a dark environment between 65 – 72F.
- Let the seeds germinate for 2 – 5 days.
- Check on them regularly. When you see roots sprouting, it’s time to plant.
Ideal growing conditions for feminized seeds
Female marijuana seeds grow well inside and outside with the right conditions. First you need to determine if you’re growing photoperiod or autoflower seeds.
If you’re growing inside, ensure your grow space has plenty of airflow and the temperature is stable. The light cycle for the seedling stage should be 16/8, and once you reach the vegetative stage, you can transition into 18/6 or 20/4. Switch to 12/12 to initiate flowering. Not all feminized seeds are autoflowers, but most autoflowers are feminized, in which case you don’t need to worry about switching light cycles.
If you’re growing feminized seeds outdoors, plant them in the spring after the last hard frost of the season. Depending on where you live, this may be as early as March or as late as May. Planting your seeds too early can result in frozen seedlings or too little light.
Feeding and nutrients
Nutrition and water are important parts of growing bountiful cannabis plants. Feminized marijuana seeds need the right pH in the water as well as a balance of micro and macro-nutrients to ensure healthy growth. These nutrients include:
- Nitrogen
- Phosphorus
- Magnesium
- Potassium
- Calcium
- Sulfur
- Iron
- Zinc
- Copper
- Manganese
- Boron
- Molybdenum
Keep a sharp eye out for any signs of distress or insect infestation during growing, like discoloration or holes in leaves.
