OG Kush: The Cult-Favorite Strain That Never Fades
OG Kush is probably the most famous cannabis strain in the world. A staple in the cannabis community since the ’90s, it is said to have originated from Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush genetics. Also known as Premium OG Kush, this strain has a distinct aroma and well-balanced effects.
This iconic strain won the best Indica award at the Santa Cruz Cup 2016. It also won second place at the Emerald Cup in 2018. Its legacy continued in 2019, taking second and third place at the High Life Cannabis Cup in the Kush Soroten category.
OG Kush packs a serious potency, thanks to its massive 26% THC. It may come with a little CBD, but its potency is too low to counter the THC. While there are different OG Kush phenotypes, our OG Kush is a 75% Indica-dominant hybrid with 25% sativa genetics.
You will know the OG Kush buds when you look at them. The fat buds have a unique grape shape with forest green nuggets. They are dense, with long and thin orange hairs protruding from their crevices to give off golden undertones. There is a generous amount of resin cover that is incomplete without crystalline trichomes.

Effects and Flavor Profile
Breaking OG Kush buds releases a sharp and deep aromatic sensation into your senses. From the start, your nostrils are dominated by earthy notes and a distinctive diesel scent. Burning the buds adds some refreshing pine undertone. On the exhale, it tickles you even more with a little sour funkiness.
Taking inspiration from the aroma, this strain has a classic woody taste with citrus hints. An attuned stoner can also pick some sweetness mixed with herbal essence. The smoke is smooth when paced well, with a little creaminess in the aftertaste.

Optimal Growing Conditions for OG Kush
This strain has a high sensitivity to the growing conditions. Not getting them right, exposes your OG Kush plants to diseases and pest attacks that lead to a poor yield. For the best results, you will need to pay attention to detail at each stage of its growth.
Seedling Stage
During the seedling stage, the focus is to be as gentle as possible to support the delicate young plants.
- Temperature: Aim for a temperature range of 20-25°C (68-77°F). Lower temperatures slow down germination and sprouting. Higher temperatures, on the other hand, can easily dry the underdeveloped roots.
- Humidity: A range of 65-79% humidity is essential in adequately hydrating the plants with enough moisture to support growth. Excessive moisture can trigger fungal infections.
- Lighting: Keep the lights indirect and soft. Too much light stresses the seedlings.
With adequate humidity, the seedlings will rarely need watering. If necessary, use the misting method that doesn’t disturb the delicate roots. Overwatering the growing medium can suffocate the roots.
Vegetative Stage
You will now shift your focus from being gentle to encouraging a strong and bushy plant structure.
- Temperature: To support vigorous growth at this stage, maintain a range of 22-26°C (72-79°F). This optimizes enzyme action in metabolic processes required for plant growth and development.
- Humidity: As the roots grow they start to absorb more moisture from the growing medium. Lower the humidity levels to about 50-60% to prevent mildew.
- Lighting: More light is needed for photosynthesis. Increase the intensity with a schedule of 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness.
As the dense foliage forms, you will need to optimize airflow and light penetration. Starting your training and pruning early enough will help the OG Kush plants recover in time for the flowering stage.
During the vegetative stage, the OG kush needs nutrient supplementation. Prioritize high nitrogen feeds for lush foliage boosted with micronutrients for healthy growth. You should also water the OG Kush plants adequately once the top layer dries out.
Flowering Stage
During the pre-flowering stage, you should encourage the plants to refocus their energy from growing big to forming more bud sites.
- Temperature: Gradually lower the temperature to 20-24°C (68-75°F) to support denser buds. The lowered temperatures also trigger more resin production.
- Humidity: As the buds start to form, lower the humidity to 40–50%. Higher humidity levels cause bud rot.
- Lighting: OG Kush is a photoperiod strain. To trigger faster flowering, switch the 18/6 schedule in the vegetative stage to 12 light hours and 12 completely dark hours. In addition, the light intensity drops to mimic natural seasons.
During flowering, switch to a bloom-focused feeding program that enriches the plants with potassium and phosphorus. These nutrients are important in bud growth and producing trichomes. Since the buds can grow heavier than the branches, proper support may be needed to avoid them snapping or bending too low.

Growing OG Kush
This legendary strain is not the best for total newbies to growing cannabis. You will need moderate to high experience to hack its preferred growing environment.
This strain does well in different environments. It, however, tends to thrive better outdoors in the summer.
Plant Size and Growth Structure
OG Kush is a medium-sized plant that is manageable indoors while taking advantage of the outdoors to stretch. It begins its growth with a moderate vertical leap but fills in its typical indica-dense foliage as it flowers. Plan for a height of 90-160 cm indoors and up to 220 cm outdoors.
Flowering Time
You should see the beautiful buds formed in about 7-9 weeks indoors. Growing this strain outdoors gives a harvest time of around October.
Yield Potential
OG Kush plants are versatile high-yielders. They perform well indoors with a yield of 500 grams per square meter. Outdoors, you can look forward to harvesting between 500 and 700 grams per plant.
Pro Grow Tip : Flush your lines regularly to remove the build up of salt and other residues. This will maintain your Ph Levels when watering your cannabis plants
Origin and History
Emerging in the early 90s, OG Kush is said to have come from a cross between Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and a Hindu Kush plant from Amsterdam. Just like there are different tales of its parents, the OG’s meaning is highly disputed. Some say it means “Original Gangster.” Others say it refers to “Ocean Grown” due to its West Coast roots.
OG Kush rose to fame in 1996 when Matt “Bubba” Berger introduced it to Los Angeles. Josh D is credited with refining and stabilizing its genetics before spreading it further. It has since become the foundation of the West Coast’s cannabis culture. Today, this cannabis classic is the father of many OG and Kush strains.
Phil –
Very good genetics, seeds were viable and germinated within the same day. I was able to get a good yield from this strain. I feel the THC is pretty high maybe more than 26% as they claim. Could be one of the higher ones.
